Walter Lampe(1962) is originally from Sydney and raised in a musical family-classical/jazz influences from parents and the 60s/70s folk/rock sounds from his sisters.Walter began piano at an early age quickly taking a liking to blues;in his later teens become interested in jazz.He began working around Sydney with trad jazz groups as well as the pop and RSL clubs.In 1986 he completed his Asscociate Diploma in Jazz Studies at the NSW Conservatorium and was playing nationally with a whole array of OZ jazz artists such as Dale Barlow;BernieMcGann;Dave Ades;Tony Buck;Warren Daly;his own trio;and was the original member of Monica Trapago and the Moochers.

In 1989 Walter moved to The Netherlands;attracted to the European improvised music scene and began leading his own trios and quartets performing thoughout Europe.He further developed his impro/compositional skills by studying with legendary Mal Waldron(Billie Holiday,Coltrane,Mingus,Steve Lacy); began working with New York singer Fay Victor; still till now collaborating with the Catalonian guitar virtuose Pere Soto; Michael Moore(altist);Melbourne trumpetist Felicity Provan ao.

In 1997 he released his first album”Walter Lampe Trio Music-live at the Bimhuis”with The Necks drummer Tony Buck-”Look out for this heavy avant garde tidal wave…”-Cuniereform Music NY/Washington.This formation was a catalyst for Lampes powerful and emotive improvising style.

In 1999 Lampe was touring the Benelux with the Belgian Afro/Jazz percussion giant Chris Joris and began stopover appearances in asia and Washington DC.In 2002 the duet album “Windmills On Mars” with Oz saxophonist Dale Barlow was released and Lampe was also invited for an extensive Indonesian tour with the JakArt Stage Bus Project.

His “Walzone”album was released in 2006 with Oz greats Jonathan Zwartz and Danny Fischer-showcasing his  gentler compositional side.

Since 2006-Walter holds a music teaching position at the Muziekpakhuis School in Amsterdam.He continues to lead his own bands; collaborating with local / international artists as well as visits and performances in Australia.
