Lady Lee and The Jazzy Katz are a 3 piece outfit from Lennox Head, NSW. They have only been together since 2015, sharing their love for music and performing.
Lee Haslau, (vocals), Horace Bevan (Guitar), and Jack Thorncraft (Bass) met under unusual, circumstances over a period of 6 months, and shared with each other their interest in music, and from there, with a few lounge practices, have created a musical group who love to perform the music spanning the decades, including Nat King Cole, Nina Simone, Antoniao Carlos Jobim and many more.
Lee knew she loved to sing. Her childhood, surrounded in music, taught her this, but she never took the pportunities to learn about music or have singing lessons. She absorbed the musical notes and rhythms that she uses today. In 2008 she heard a jazz band playing in a local bar. She asked to go to a practice and then became part of that group, called Doxy, in Margaret River, WA. Moving here in 2013 she had no musical contacts until she met Horace Bevan last year. I love to sing, and I love Jazz, she told Horace who was willing to play jazz instead of rock and roll. A few gigs at the local Club Lennox was the opportunity they needed.
Horace Bevan has been playing guitar in the local area for over 30 years. He has played in many groups and travelled to the US early in his career. Horace has embraced the jazz genre and has brought an energy and vibe with him when playing the Blues songs. He has worked numerous times with Kevin Borich, an Australian Blues Icon. He is a songwriter and poet and loves to perform.
Jack Thorncraft is a professional musician, and although he says he is ‘old’, we love what he brings to our group. Jack has been performing in the Jazz circles of Sydney, Brisbane, London and since his early twenties. He is a legend. A chance meeting with Jack when he heard Horace and Lee playing, describing the music as “organic”, spurred Lee to invite him to join our practices. And that he did, bringing his world of Jazz knowledge and immense skill on his lovely lady Bass. Thanks to Jack’s and his inspiring arrangements, the music this group produces is not only ‘organic’, but it jumps, and jives, bringing the genre of Jazz and Blues to life.
