2018 NYE COMEDY AT THE BIG GIG
MANDY NOLAN PRESENTS
RELEASE THE BEES – DUSTY RICH – SEAN CHOOLBURRA
WITH RICHIE WILLIAMS – Dinner Music
TWO COURSE DINNER & SHOW
MONDAY DECEMBER 31, 2018
Doors: 6.30pm – Dinner & Show: 7.30pm
For eleven years now the Ballina RSL have been offering comedy lovers a chance to bring in the New Year with a laugh. With a sit down meal, and comedy right up to midnight. This is a totally civilised way to wave goodbye to 2018 and welcome in 2019. Hosted by Big Gig comedian and local legend of laughter Mandy Nolan with some of her favourite funny people.
RELEASE THE BEES
Between the two of them, musical comedy duo Release the Bees have been seen everywhere from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Brisbane Comedy Festival and ABC2. The guitarist, David, has also been seen smoking outside comedy venues, which is disappointing.
A comedic space-warrior riding a living volcano with one hand whipping the reins and the other gingerly fingering the lava-hot truth that flows freely down all sides – is smothering the world in comedy magma.
His meteoric rise in the Comedy Industry is due to the fact he had learnt to ride meteors at a very young age – a mind meteor, smashing through the atmosphere of mediocre and mundane. Each show is unpredictable and hilarious, leaving audiences gasping for air.
Sean Choolburra is known and acknowledged as the funniest and most enduring Aboriginal Australian comedian. Born in Townsville QLD coming from a family of twelve, his comedy is created from a wide variety of life time experiences, stories, and observations.
Sean is one of few comedians who choose not ‘profanity’ building his craft around those early comic pioneers. Sean creates his unique brand of comedy which sets him apart and is therefore suitable for audiences of all ages. As a comedian Sean’s audiences whether corporate, private, public sector, or community are always delighted by his wit, energetic delivery, improvisations, and non-stop dance moves.

MAL EASTICK PRESENTS
MAL’S BLUES BAR FROM 9PM
with Special Guest
Mal Eastick sure knows the blues, but his musical ascendancy and versatility make his live shows, as they ever were, the stuff of legend.
“THE MIGHTY ROCK”
Mal has crafted a dynamic new show which draws on some of the highlights of his 30 year career as one of Australia’s leading guitar players. He is making up for the lost years with a vengeance. Mal has been widening his musical horizons, through honky-tonk and rock. He has created an acoustic duo with vocalist John Makey and has been performing in select gigs around NSW. He has resumed promotion of the re-released “Spirit” album and is passing on his talents and experience to guitar students of all abilities.
Special Guest Vocalist
John was born in England, and migrated to Sydney, Australia with his family whilst very young. A big-voiced singer who grew up with a penchant for soulful blues-rock a la Paul Rodgers and Frankie Miller, John also sites influences as diverse as B.B.King, Otis Redding, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix to name a few.
John is a natural and committed vocalist who started out with northern Sydney band ‘The River Rats’ – 1984-1987 – followed by ‘Black Label’ – 1988-1995 – and ‘Mudcrab Soup’ – 1995-1997. It was with Mudcrab Soup that John was booked to open the show for Mal Eastick and his Band in December 1996
Mal was immediately taken and asked John to sing with him on his forthcoming tour. John became the vocalist in Mal’s band in March 1997, and a great musical combination was born.
