Robert (Bob) Howlett (Bachelor of Contemporary Music, SCU) is one of Australia’s premier pianists, keyboard players and Hammond organists. Bob has performed nine contracts as piano intermissionist on Royal Caribbean International’s largest cruise ships, working out of Miami, Florida; Southampton, UK; Rome and Barcelona, Europe. Bob performs extensively on the north Queensland resort and corporate function circuits, with solo piano residencies at Pullman International Hotel, Cairns; Reef Hotel Casino, Cairns; Sheraton Mirage Resort, Port Douglas; Dunk Island and Bedarra Island resorts, and regular ensemble performances at Cairns’ Jazz Club.
Bob has toured extensively throughout Australia and Asia with leading Australian RnB, rock and pop bands and music theatre shows: Renee Geyer, Max Merritt, Doug Parkinson, Jeff St. John, Lisa Hunt’s Forever Soul tour, Greg Lyon’s Hip Operation, The Troubadours Show Group, and the Australian production of Grease: The Musical. For four years, Bob was Musical Director for renowned Johno’s Blues Bar, Cairns, and resident keyboardist with Johno’s Blues Band, backing international artists Johnnie Johnson, Joe Lewis Walker, Nathan Cavalieri, Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones) and Guitar Shorty. Bob also directed and led his original ensemble Bob Howlett’s Funky Trio Non Troppo performing at Cairns Reef Hotel Casino. Other band membership comprises The Swingin’ Alley Catz, Fingerprint Trio and The Tall Poppies.
Bob’s talents are in high demand as a session recording artist, playing on over 50 recordings at Pegasus Studios and Select Sound Studios, Cairns, and Coral Sea Studios, Clifton Beach. Bob was session keyboard player for the music theatre show: Paronella Park, The Impossible Dream.
Bob’s solo repertoire ranges from the great American Songbook, jazz standards, Latin dance tunes, Broadway musicals, blues, ambient and popular. His keyboard band styles cover RnB, jazz, blues, funk and contemporary genres.
